Hey, it’s Scarlett here. I’m so excited because my first box set releases today (I never had enough books before – LOL). The Second Circle Tattoos series contains all four books, and an exclusive extended epilogue which picks up the gang a year after the final book ends. Which got me to thinking…
Who doesn’t love a bit of overindulgence? It’s certainly been the season for it! I’m just as guilty as the rest when it comes down to it and could quite happily spend an entire weekend locked away from the world, binge watching the latest season of my favorite show on Netflix or embarking on a box set reading marathon from my best-loved author. And I’m not alone on this. Last year, ‘binge-watch’ became Collins Dictionary’s word of the year, and studies show that more and more of us are spending hours, days, and even entire weekends, getting lost in our favorite entertainment shows and books.
Entertainment bingeing has definitely become the norm; it seems like we need that big hit, all in one go, even it means staying up way too late on a school night. It might be something to do with the way everything in our lives has become instantly accessible, 24/7, but the romantic in me likes to think that feasting on something you love allows you to immerse yourself in a different world for a few hours. You can get inside the characters’ minds, really connect with them and the story in a way that you couldn’t do before. Having to wait for new episodes of shows week by week, or for your chosen author to pen their next installment of the story you just have to read, takes away a bit of the momentum. A little bit of the excitement gets lost. And who doesn’t want to get swept up and whisked away from life for a while? I know I do. It’s why I love the romance genre!
A while back, I stumbled across Sons of Anarchy. For those of you who haven’t seen the show (you SO need to watch it), it is about a group of bad boys who belong to SAMCRO (the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original). It was well into season three when I found it, but I loved it and binge watched it all in one go. For about a month after, I kept dreaming about being part of a motorcycle crew and found my mind wandering off to riding on the back of Jax Teller’s bike!
It’s the same with book box sets. I love it when I find a good box set bargain, especially when it contains authors I am obsessed with combined with authors I don’t know, or a collection about something I love. If it’s a series and book one hooks me, that’s it! My family probably won’t see me much for a few days.
Personally, I champion binge watching and reading. It’s almost like an extreme sport for the mind – feeding your imagination and sparking those creative juices. Even after the lows hit and you wind up with the biggest book/show hangover, feeling bereft that the characters’ have exited your life and wondering if you’ll ever fall in love with another man ever again (because how could he possibly live up to Jax Teller), or if you’ll ever know what it’s like to feel the wind in your hair as you ride your dragon. As soon as the next awesome book or show lands, the rollercoaster of emotion and exhilaration begins again. That kind of emotional engagement – the excitement of getting hooked and anticipation of what’s coming next – is kind of thrilling, don’t you think? In fact, it’s about time I found my next obsession…
So, tell me… do you binge? And if so, what was the last great read/watch you enjoyed?
