Sarah Ballance: Nineteen Years

Nineteen years ago today, it snowed.
Probably not news in most places, but it rarely accumulates here. Once, twice a year tops. None at all, we don’t blink. A half inch shuts us down. Snow tends to be memorable.
Nineteen years ago today, the snow was more memorable than most.
Nineteen years ago today, my husband and I became a thing.
I was 18, he 22. When you’re that old, you think you know things. Now I’m a little bit older and realize we were kids and didn’t know anything. But still, we knew.
We married 15 months later. In the seventeen and a half years since, we’ve never been apart. Only after the birth of our second through sixth babies, when I stayed overnight at the hospital, have we not slept in the same bed, and only then because we didn’t want the older kids to feel snubbed by the newer. But we still spent half the night on the phone, just like we did nineteen years ago.
Nineteen years, and I still get butterflies when he comes through the door. I still feel treasured. I still treasure him.
Love stories are a funny thing. No right, no wrong. Just two people, writing their own romance, choosing their own words, falling in their own way. As an author, I get to experience those moments over and over again through my characters, but it’s not just about them.
It’s about him.
Every first kiss, every first touch. Every moment two people first realize they belong together. Every word. That’s me, falling in love with my husband all over again.
Every love story I’ve written has been ours.
Nineteen years. They’ve been something.
