Period Dramas and a #Giveaway

war and peaceSince this is my first post in the new year, I want to wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2016! One of my favorite things about the new year are new books, which eventually lead to new adaptations of books. Though the book is nearly always better than the movie/series/mini-series, there is something magical about seeing period dramas brought to life. The scenery, the costumes, the houses, the hot actors (Colin Firth and Sam Heughan, anyone?).

Though this year marks our last season of Downton Abbey (sniff, sniff), we still have the Vikings to look forward to in February, and Outlander will be back soon. I’m also excited about a couple of new mini series. I was that geeky girl in high school who liked reading Beowulf, so despite it’s lackluster ratings in the UK, I’m looking forward to watching it. It premiers on Esquire on January 23rd.

Some of you may remember that in addition to Regencies, I write historical romance set in Imperial Russia, specifically during the reign of Alexander the First, so I couldn’t be more excited to watch War and Peace. Though this is BBC production, in the U.S. it will air on Lifetime beginning on January 18th.

So tell me, what is your favorite period drama, and/or which new series are you most excited to watch?

Giveaway: I happen to have two brand new hardcover copies of Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, Book Eight of the Outlander Series. Since I don’t need two, I’d like to give away one copy to someone who will provide it with a good home. If you want to enter the giveaway, please leave me a note in the comments and I’ll choose a winner from those who enter.

Thanks so much for posting about this. I LOVE period dramas also and didn’t know about WAR & PEACE! I hope to catch it!

love so many period dramas… anything of Austen, Brontes, North and South (Gaskell), North and South (Jakes), Gone With The Wind, Downton Abbey, etc…

I’ve been seeing the commercials for War and Peace on TV…

Thanks for stopping by, Denise! I love all of the Austen and Brontes as well, and Downton. I missed out on the “new” North and South, but I loved the John Jakes version.

I liked Beowulf, too — in fact, I have a copy of it in the Anglo-Saxon with Seamus Heaney’s translation . I didn’t know about War and Peace either — sounds awesome. 🙂

I’m so excited about this! Even my husband thought War and Peace looked good (he may not know it’s a book, and I’m not telling him).

Would love to win the hard cover of Diana Galbadons book. Just love them all. Involved my sister in reading them. Just love Jamie, Claire and all the countries they visit or get involved in (Scotland, France, Islands, USA). Would love to have it and not have to go to the public library and wait for its return and then have only 7 days to read. That’s not possible for me.

Talk about crazy coinky-dink. I just saw the trailer for War and Peace today from a friend and shared it. So looking forward to this mini-series. My favorite period drama is Sense and Sensibility though…Col Brandon, . I hate that Downton is leaving us because the first two episodes have been AWESOME! I’ve got to catch up on Outlander (slacker) but NOW I’m just DYING to see what happens next on The Last Kingdom. BBCAmerica is way too sketchy about when the next episodes will air, grr.

    Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

I know. BBC American likes to mess with us. I was skeptical of War & Peace at first because it’s on Lifetime, but then I saw that it’s done by the BBC. You’re entered in the giveaway, Tina. Good luck!

I love period dramas too, Ally. Looking forward to War and Peace.

You’re very dedicated, Sue-Ellen. I don’t have the patience to count hours. 🙂 You’re the second person to mention The Last Kingdom. I definitely need to look into that.

I have been collecting all the books (don’t have the last one though). I thought it was going to be a trilogy but then she kept writing and I kept thinking after I get the next one I’ll start reading lol. This is going to be the year of Outlander !!

    • Ally Broadfield

Oh my goodness, it might take you all year to read them all! I’ve read the first four books twice, but the last four only once. There’s so much time between releases (because they’re so huge!) that I forget a lot of the details. Hopefully they’ll speed up production of the show so it can refresh my memory. You’re entered in the giveaway, too .Good luck!

Happy and prosperous 2016 to you, too! I’m looking forward to War and Peace and I’m interested in Vikinks 🙂 Thank you for this wonderful chance!

I love period dramas. I really loved The White Queen, Downton Abbey, and am really enjoying Outlander so far (although I love the books so much more). War and Peace sounds awesome. Can’t wait. Thanks for the chance to win.. I am trying to collect the whole series. Happy 2016!

As a general rule, the book is always better than the on screen version, but it is fun to see the costumes, houses, and hot heroes. You’re entered in the giveaway!

  12. Jeanna Massman

I would love to win this book! Thanks for the opportunity.
