ALL IN THE NAME OF RESEARCH by VICTORIA VANE

After thirteen historical novels and novellas, SLOW HAND marks my debut into contemporary romance. As a lifelong horse owner, it seemed natural for me to write about cowboys, but once I began, I quickly discovered how clueless I was about the real life struggles of those who make their living in the wide open spaces of Montana and Wyoming (the primary settings for my stories). Once I realized how  little I actually knew, I set about writing in the only way I know how—I started researching.

I studied maps, Googled places for my settings, and then went about reading all I could find about cattle ranching. I quickly learned, however, that my best resources about ranchers and cowboys were actual ranchers and cowboys!

So, my adventure began…

Since my first and second stories take place in southwest Montana, last year I spend three weeks in a guest cabin at a private ranch in Three Fork Montana with people whose ranching roots are four generations deep. I made a similar trip to Wyoming to last May to learn about wolves and wild horses, the topics of my third and fourth books, SHARP SHOOTER and SILVER TONGUE.

Over the past eighteen months, I have gotten to know ranchers, rodeo cowboys, stock contractors. I’ve learned about raising and breeding cattle, wolf conservation, and wild horse gathering and training and rodeo (all of which is part of this series).

This has been one of the best experiences ever because I got to learn from the very people who live the life I am writing about. In getting to know the real people and their real struggles I found inspiration for the stories and for my characters.

Although SLOW HAND  marks the beginning of a brand new  journey for me, my historical readers will find that my trademarks still remain—well-researched, scorching hot, emotionally compelling, character-driven stories.

Mm. Cowboys. Now THAT’s some research I wouldn’t mind doing! 😉 In seriousness, though, I bet the onsite research was amazing! Best of luck on this new venture!

I liked this post of yours, Victoria. And I appreciated it. It is a very smart woman, a smart author, who does the kind of “real” research that you do with a new or uknfamiliar subject. It shows in your writing. The first two in your contemporary western romances were extraordinary because of your writing skill and, no doubt, your research. jdh2690@gmail.com

Cool pics! I didn’t realize how deeply you’d gone into ranching issues. 🙂

Your books are always detailed. I know you must do a ton of research! Can’t wait for Sharp Shooter! Looking forward to having you/Dirk on my blog on the 27th!

Learning to ride a horse is one of the things I want to do before the end of this year and your post has inspired me to pursue that goal, Victoria! Love the cover for Sharp Shooter =D
