I don’t know if I’m frightened or so excited I’m going to bounce out of my sneakers. I DO know my 6 year old boy-child can barely contain his joy and excitement!
It’s been about, oh, 20 years since I’ve been to Disney World, and I don’t remember a thing except it was hot, Space Mountain was scary (I was still sleeping with a nightlight back then), and I walked about 2000 miles in a week. Oh, and it was fun. Even though I was a tweenager and thought I was too cool for anything family related, I remember it was such fun. Overwhelmingly fun! I couldn’t hold onto my tweenager angst in the face of Mickey and his friends.
What is it about Disney World that brings out the kid in us? Because I feel like a kid. A slightly nervous kid, though. This time I’m not just following my parents around, I’m planning it. It’s my job to make this THE trip of my child’s 6 year old life, with all the joy and fun I can find for him. Magic Kingdom? Check. Animal Kingdom? Check. Water park tickets? Check. Rented house with a swimming pool? Check.
But how do I know where to go and what rides he will like best? How do I know if we missed something important, or if I made a mistake in my (months, and months, and months) of planning? What if we get there and realize I bought the wrong tickets or the park is so busy we can’t do what we want the day we’re there? What if, what if, what if…
I decided to let all of those worries go. This is a vacation. A big one, to be sure, but it’s meant to be fun. And now I’m so darn excited I can’t wait for tomorrow morning! We’re going to Disney World. The place where all childhood dreams come true. Where adult dreams come true. No worries allowed!
Wish me luck! I have an 18 hour drive with a 6 year old ahead of me…
